LEGEND STUDIO: You have been called as the new trendsetter in Manipuri film by most of film lovers. Was it due to the story line, your directorial debut or the best editing skills?
YOIMAYAI: I wont called myself a trendsetter. I m just a storyteller, trying to give my vision on screen in my own style.
LEGEND STUDIO: What is the best part in your debut work, "Panthungee Wangmada"?
YOIMAYAI: I would say VISUAL EFFECTS of course, but MUSIC plays a big role in this film. Being a new comer BALA my lead actress is also the plus point. In short teamwork is the best part.
LEGEND STUDIO: Tell me your directorial experince in Panthungee Wangmada?
YOIMAYAI: Good experience! But there happens to be a limit in creativity working in place like Manipur. There are lots of communication gaps between the technical team and me.
LEGEND STUDIO: Rate from your view the standard of Manipuri cinema looking at other cinema.
YOIMAYAI: Very low. People have no respect for the medium. Filmmakers need to spend more time on script to compete with national and international film.
LEGEND STUDIO: How do you feel the experince in Manipuri filmmaking, the stars, the crew and equipments?
YOIMAYAI: No discipline at all. Artist never study his or her character, they want script to be prompt on set. Lacks of self-interest seen on set. DOP (director of photography) doesn’t know what is the story he is going to shoot. Equipment is sufficient according to me.
LEGEND STUDIO: Is there any special technique introduced by you as new in the Manipuri cinema?
YOIMAYAI: There is no such technique I have introduced newly. Film being an illusion, an audiovisual medium. I do tried on VISUAL EFFECTS, BACKGROUND MUSIC SCORING for film and TREATMENT but don’t know how much I have success.
LEGEND STUDIO: What is your concept on Manipuri cinema, in terms of providing entertainment and education?
YOIMAYAI: The word entertainment is not there in Manipuri cinema. I can’t enjoy watching film in cinema halls due to lacks of clarity, sound system and the surrounding. People have forgot the taste of watching film in theater. Story line too weak so there are only few film, which we can call educational film.
LEGEND STUDIO: Will Manipuri cinema need to change from the present style of copying Bollywood, Korean and other South Films?
YOIMAYAI: No. I will say do bring the style or adapt from them and fit it to our soil and resources if needed. But don’t let people say it is copied from other film. Let Manipuri cinema grow.
LEGEND STUDIO: How will your cinema serve the fans in Manipur?
YOIMAYAI: I want to try all types genre in my film. I will make film for ordinary audience and also for the film critics separately. My fans will see and feel the different layers of life in my film.
LEGEND STUDIO: Will Manipur cinema cross the myth that it is only for the valley districts?
YOIMAYAI: Yes, it will. If the film makers in Manipur are aware of the demands and market strategy outside the valley.
LEGEND STUDIO: How will you change the format of Manipuri cinema?
YOIMAYAI: I can’t and I won’t change the format but surely will try to change the technique and presentation of Manipuri cinema.
LEGEND STUDIO: What is your next projects?
YOIMAYAI: I am in process of making few short films in video and celluloid format for festival. 3 digital video film in pre production but I am not too sure of them as I don’t want to be commercialize.
LEGEND STUDIO. What is your message to new filmmakers who like to enter Manipuri cinema?
YOIMAYAI: Discipline is a much. Know your subject. Respect your thought and vision. There are no rules in filmmaking but still there are few rules to follow, so, know the rules to break the rules…!
LEGEND STUDIO: What will be your trademark in manipuri cinema?
YOIMAYAI: Experimental! I want try new style and technique in Manipuri cinema so my trademark should be Experimental.
